If this book were better written and a little quicker paced I think it could easily become one of my favourites. I'd never heard of Sybil or multiple personalities. Wilbur determined that Mason's mother, Hattie Dorsett, a psychotic who had been hospitalized with schizophrenia, had subjected the young Mason to years of astonishing sexual and sadistic abuses. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in the mysteries of the human mind. You get to hear about the details of Sybil's childhood including some pretty nasty bits about her abusive mother and absent father. Spiegel played in Mason's therapy, and changed or omitted many other parts of the tale that did not conform to the compelling narrative envisioned by Schreiber.
